Shofuso Interior

The main room of the house features the built-in tsukue-shoin desk, staggered shelves (chigaidana) and an openwork transom (ramma). A prominent tokonoma graces the interior wall of the room; this recessed alcove provides a space where scrolls of calligraphy or painting can be hung and ikebana flower arrangements displayed.

Japanese houses use little furniture, and bedding was stored in closets when not in use, leaving the rooms uncluttered. Any room could serve for sleeping, dining, meeting guests, or other functions. People sat directly on the floor or on cushions (zabuton), which made their perception of the rooms still larger. The ambiance of airy spaciousness is augmented by the fragrance of the hinoki wood and tatami. Elegant yet simple, the shoin is grand yet human in scale, but still practical for a land of earthquakes and hot, humid summers.
